When I recently started seeking software for vocabulary practice for my secondary students of English as a foreign language, I had no idea how much I should expect to get from a ready-made package. Most of our students are middle to senior management on short intensive residential training programmes. They work hard both at work and on their course with us. We are always looking for material which reinforces what we do during the day but in a more relaxed and informal way. Hex-Lex fits this requirement exactly. As our students use computers in their every day life, the environment is familiar and comfortable for them; in addition, they enjoy having a more informal structure and presentation that they can use during their own time.
The huge range of material available on Hex-Lex means they can practise what they have been doing during the day or explore language areas that are not often found elsewhere. Hex-Lex provides relevant, effective and very enjoyable support material. A very useful product that should dovetail well with most course formats.

The program is fairly intuitive. A student with low computer skills and low knowledge of the rubric could find their way around the game fairly easily. Among the other positive features are the supply of games, which will keep gamers happy. Moreover, the repetitive element allows students to absorb new language, or to review.
Should appeal to young adults as well as those needing to “relax” away from the rigours of the language lesson!

| I really like the activities!. One reason I stopped using the
[games] I produced [myself] was that there were far too many lexical items and in
playing the game most of them would never get used.... You've solved the problem nicely
[in HexLex] by limiting the number of items by repeating them, which gives the
students more practice. I like the graphics and the way the whole thing
is set up. I also really like the way that the items are randomly
selected so you are always playing a new game but some things will be
recycled. Also, the fact that you have a choice about what kinds of
lexical items you want to practice. I can see, for example, as it gets
bigger, a student could focus on something like EAP.
